Automatic background removal is the AI feature that works best, most often, on the widest range of images. On a clearly separated subject it is essentially solved, and any photographer still drawing paths around products by hand is spending time they do not need to.
It also fails on the same four things it has always failed on, and it fails confidently — producing a cut-out that looks fine in the preview and falls apart on a different background.
The four hard cases
1. Fine hair against a busy background
The classic. Individual strands are smaller than the model's effective resolution, and where the background behind them is similar in tone the boundary is genuinely ambiguous.
What you get is one of two failures: a hard edge that cuts strands off mid-length, giving a helmet outline; or a soft halo that carries background colour into the hair, which is invisible on a similar background and glaringly wrong on a contrasting one.
Test for it: put the cut-out on a background of the opposite tone. Light hair goes on black, dark hair on white. Every problem appears immediately.
2. Transparency and semi-transparency
Glass, veils, tulle, smoke, water, sheer fabric. A binary mask cannot represent "60% of this pixel is subject". Automatic tools nearly always produce a hard decision, so a veil becomes opaque and a glass becomes an outline of a glass.
This needs a real alpha channel and usually manual work. It is the case where automatic removal is not slightly worse, it is the wrong shape of answer.
3. Motion blur
A blurred hand or a swinging hem is subject and background mixed together across many pixels. Cut it out hard and the motion becomes a smear with a crisp edge, which reads as an error rather than as movement.
4. Matched tones
A dark suit on a dark background, blonde hair against a cream wall. The model has no signal to work from because there genuinely is very little. Results here are close to guesses.
What to look for in a tool
Alpha output, not a hard mask. A tool that can return partial transparency handles hair and soft edges far better. If the output is 1-bit, no amount of refinement will fix a veil.
Full-resolution output. Many free and freemium tools cap the download. A cut-out is usually a step toward a composite, and a capped cut-out cannot go into a print-resolution frame. Test the download, not the preview.
An editable mask. The best workflow is automatic first pass, then manual refinement. Tools that return only a flattened cut-out force you to start again when the edge is wrong in one place.
Batch, if you need it. For e-commerce this is the whole value. For occasional use it does not matter.
A clear statement about uploads. Product shots under embargo and client portraits both deserve a decision about where they are sent.
The workflow that actually produces clean edges
Not "run the tool and hope":
- Let the tool make the first pass. It will get 90% of the edge right in seconds, and that 90% is real work you did not do.
- Look at the mask, not the cut-out. Viewing the mask itself shows problems the composite hides.
- Refine the hair separately. Hair almost always needs its own treatment — a separate selection, a different edge softness, and often some rebuilding.
- Check on a contrasting background. Always. This is the step that catches halos.
- Add a contact shadow. The single biggest tell in a composite is not the edge, it is that nothing is touching anything. A subject with a perfect cut-out and no shadow floats.
That last point is worth dwelling on. Photographers obsess over edges and clients notice shadows. A slightly imperfect edge with a believable contact shadow reads as real; a perfect edge with nothing underneath does not.
When to shoot for the cut-out instead
If you know a frame is going to be extracted, you can make it trivial at capture: a clean, evenly lit background well separated in tone from the subject, and light on the subject's edge to define it. Ten seconds of thought at the shoot removes an hour later.
For product work this is standard practice. For portraits it is worth doing whenever the client has mentioned a composite.

Cutting out is the easy half. Making the subject belong in the new scene is the work: relighting so the light in the picture is the light on the person, matching colour temperature, drawing contact and cast shadows, and adding the atmospheric separation that stops two layers looking like two layers.

Making the composite believable
Once the cut-out is clean, the remaining work is what actually decides whether anyone believes it.
Draw a contact shadow where the subject meets the ground. This is the single biggest tell and photographers consistently underweight it — a slightly imperfect edge with a believable shadow reads as real, while a perfect edge with nothing underneath floats.
Relight the subject to the new scene, so the light in the picture is the light on the person. A composite where the key comes from the left and the sky is bright on the right is wrong in a way viewers feel before they see.
Add atmospheric separation between planes. Two perfectly sharp layers read as two layers; a little haze between them reads as distance.

Common questions
Why does my cut-out look fine until I put it on a new background? Because a halo or a background-coloured fringe is invisible against the original and obvious against a contrasting one. Always check a cut-out on the opposite tone — light subject on black, dark on white.
