
Plastic skin has one cause: colour and texture were fixed together. Separating them is the entire technique, and it is less complicated than it sounds.
The short answer: plastic skin happens when colour and texture are fixed together. Frequency separation splits them so tone can be evened while the pore structure stays untouched, dodge and burn rebuilds the modelling that evening the tone flattens, and reducing the final group opacity to 70-85% puts back a fraction of everything you removed. If you cannot see pores at 100%, you went too far.
Every plastic-looking portrait has the same cause. Somebody tried to fix uneven colour with a tool that also removes texture.
Skin has two independent problems. Colour: redness, blotching, shadows under the eyes, uneven tone across the forehead. Texture: pores, fine lines, the surface structure that makes skin look like skin.
Blur, smooth or clone across an area and you fix the colour by destroying the texture. That is the whole failure mode, and everything below is a way of not doing it.
Frequency separation, explained without the jargon
The technique splits one image into two layers:
- A low frequency layer holding only broad colour and tone — a soft, blurry version of the face.
- A high frequency layer holding only fine detail — the pores and lines, with no colour information.
Stacked with the right blend mode they reconstruct the original exactly. But now you can work on colour without touching texture, and on texture without touching colour.
Even out blotching on the low layer and the pores are unaffected, because they are not on that layer. Remove a spot on the high layer and the surrounding colour is unaffected.
That is it. Everything else is technique.
The order that works
1. Clean the obvious things first, on a separate layer.
Healing brush on a new empty layer set to sample all layers. Spots, stray hairs, dust, a piece of lint on the collar. Anything that is clearly a temporary blemish rather than part of the person.
Doing this before frequency separation means you are not carrying obvious flaws into the split.
2. Split.
Two copies of the layer. Gaussian blur the lower one until the pores just disappear — usually a small radius, and the exact number depends on resolution, so judge by eye rather than by a value someone else wrote down. Apply-image the upper one against it with the correct settings for your bit depth, then set it to Linear Light.
Group them. Everything below is done inside that group.
3. Even the colour on the low layer.
Lasso an uneven area with a large feather, then blur or use the mixer brush at low opacity. You are aiming for slightly more even, not flat. Work at 100% but check at 33% frequently, because at 100% every face looks blotchy and you will over-correct.
Redness around the nose, shadow under the eyes, blotching on the cheeks, uneven tone across the forehead — this layer is where all of that goes.
4. Clean the texture on the high layer.
Clone stamp at 100% opacity, sampling nearby skin with similar texture. Because there is no colour on this layer you can sample from a slightly different part of the face without a tonal mismatch.
Do not blanket it. Remove specific things.
5. Rebuild the modelling with dodge and burn.
This is the step most people skip and it is the difference between "cleaned up" and "retouched". Evening the colour flattens the face. The shape has to be put back.
A curves adjustment layer set brighter with a black mask, and another set darker with a black mask. Paint on them with a very low flow — 2 to 5% — with a soft brush.
Burn: the sides of the nose, under the cheekbones, under the jaw, the crease of the eyelid, the outer edges of the forehead. Dodge: down the bridge of the nose, the tops of the cheekbones, the centre of the forehead, the chin, under the eyes.
Follow the light that was actually there. You are strengthening it, not inventing a new one.
6. Reduce the whole thing.
Put everything in a group and lower the group's opacity. 70–85% is common. This single move is what makes retouching read as natural, because it puts back a fraction of every imperfection you removed.
The rules that keep it looking real
Keep the pores. If you cannot see skin texture at 100%, you have gone too far. Full stop.
Keep the character. Freckles, moles, scars, laugh lines and skin markings are the person. Removing them is a decision the client should make, not you. Ask — and the answer is usually "keep them", which surprises photographers every time.
Do not slim, reshape or enlarge anything unless asked. Liquify on a face is a request, not a default.
Check at three sizes. 100% for texture, 50% for tone, and thumbnail. A retouch that only works at one size is not finished.
Look at it the next day. Every retoucher over-works skin when tired. The morning is where you find it.
What "natural" actually means to a client
It means: they look like themselves on a good day. Not younger, not smoother, not different. The client should not be able to say what was done — only that they like the photograph.

Common questions
How do I know if I have gone too far? If you cannot see skin texture at 100%, you have. That is the whole test, and it is binary.

Why does my retouched face look flat even though the skin is clean? Because evening the tone removed the modelling and it was not rebuilt. Dodge and burn is not an optional finishing step; it is what puts the shape back.
