RAW vs JPEG for Professional Retouching

A raw file is measurement data; a JPEG is a finished interpretation. That single difference explains every practical consequence of choosing between them.

The short answer: a raw file is what the sensor measured; a JPEG is a photograph the camera already made from it. Shoot raw whenever you need latitude — mixed light, recovery, print. Shoot JPEG when exposure and white balance are right in camera and the deliverable is web-sized, which is more often than raw purists admit.

A raw file is a record of what the sensor measured. A JPEG is a photograph the camera made from that measurement, with white balance, tone curve, sharpening, noise reduction and colour applied, then compressed and discarded.

Every practical difference follows from that one fact.

What raw gives you that JPEG does not

Bit depth. Raw files are typically 12 or 14 bits per channel; JPEG is 8. That is thousands of tonal levels against 256. It matters most where the tones are close together — a gradient sky, a shadow you want to lift, skin under soft light — because 8-bit runs out of steps and bands.

Highlight and shadow latitude. A raw file frequently holds a stop or more of recoverable highlight and several stops of shadow that a JPEG has already clipped. Once clipped, it is gone.

White balance as a setting rather than a fact. In raw, white balance is applied at processing time and can be changed with no penalty. In JPEG it is baked in, and correcting it later means pushing already-quantised values around, which is where colour breaks.

No compression artefacts. JPEG compression discards detail in blocks. On smooth areas — sky, skin, a plain backdrop — the artefacts are visible once you start editing, and every subsequent operation amplifies them.

Your choice of demosaic and noise reduction. Camera JPEG processing is a decision made by the manufacturer for a general case. Modern raw processors are usually better, and always more adjustable.

When JPEG is genuinely fine

This is where the usual advice becomes unhelpfully absolute. JPEG is the right choice more often than raw evangelism admits.

High-volume event work with consistent lighting, where you nailed the exposure and white balance, and the deliverable is web-sized. The extra latitude buys you nothing and the smaller files buy you speed at every step.

Sports and long bursts, where buffer depth is the constraint and you will deliver a handful of frames.

Anything delivered same-day where the workflow is: shoot, cull, minor correction, send.

When storage or transfer is the real limit. A raw archive is many times the size, and that is a genuine cost.

The honest test: if your exposure and white balance are right in camera and the frame needs cosmetic work rather than tonal recovery, JPEG loses you very little.

When raw is not optional

Mixed or difficult lighting. Because white balance is a setting, not a fact. Underexposure you intend to recover. Because the shadow information exists. Any risk of blown highlights. Because there is headroom. Print output at size. Because 8-bit banding shows on paper. Anything going to a retoucher for real work. Because you are handing them the latitude, and they cannot use what was thrown away.

Shoot RAW+JPEG?

Reasonable if your card and workflow can take it. You get instant previews and fast turnaround from the JPEGs, with the raw available for the frames that need it.

The cost is storage and a slightly more complicated import. For photographers whose work is mostly quick delivery with occasional difficult frames, it is a sensible middle.

What to send a retoucher

Send raw if the work involves exposure, white balance, shadow recovery or highlight recovery. Say which processing you have already applied, or send a reference of how you want it looking.

Send layered TIFF or PSD if you have already done work you want preserved.

Send high-quality JPEG at full resolution if the exposure and colour are already right and the work is cosmetic — skin, distraction removal, cleanup. This is perfectly professional and it makes transfers far faster.

Never send a web-sized JPEG and expect print-ready output. Nothing recovers resolution that was not sent.

A practical note on 16-bit

If you are sending a TIFF, 16-bit is worth the file size when the frame will receive significant tonal work. Every dodge and burn stroke, every curve and every colour shift quantises, and 8-bit runs out.

For a cosmetic retouch on a well-exposed frame, 8-bit is fine.

The summary

Raw is measurement; JPEG is interpretation. Raw where you need latitude, JPEG where you do not, and be honest about which situation you are in rather than defaulting to either.

What this changes about your workflow

Two practical consequences.

First, the format decision is per job rather than a permanent position. A studio session with controlled light and a same-day web delivery is a different problem from an evening reception under mixed light, and the same photographer can reasonably answer differently on each.

Second, what you send onward matters as much as what you shoot. A retoucher can only use the latitude you hand them, so a raw archive and a web-sized JPEG delivery is the worst of both — you paid the storage cost and gave away the benefit.

Send the best source that the work requires: raw for recovery, layered TIFF or PSD if you have started, full-resolution JPEG for cosmetic work on a well-exposed frame. And say which processing you have already applied, because a retoucher who knows what has been done will not undo it.
