sRGB vs Adobe RGB: Which Color Space Should Photographers Deliver?

The rule is simple once you separate working from delivering. Almost every colour-space disaster comes from applying one answer to both.

The short answer: work wide and deliver narrow. Edit in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto at 16 bits to preserve options, and convert to sRGB for anything that will be seen on a screen. For print, ask the lab. Almost every colour disaster comes from applying one answer to both questions.

Colour space confuses people because two different questions get answered with one word.

What do I work in? and what do I deliver? have different answers, and applying either answer to the other question is where every colour disaster comes from.

What a colour space is

A definition of which colours the numbers in your file refer to. The same RGB triplet means a different colour in sRGB than it does in Adobe RGB.

Some spaces cover a wider range than others. Wider is not automatically better — it means the same number of steps are spread across more colours, so each step is coarser. In 8-bit that causes visible banding, which is why bit depth and colour space are related decisions rather than independent ones.

The three you will encounter

sRGB — the smallest of the three and the universal default. Every browser, every phone, every social platform and every consumer print service assumes it. If a file has no profile, it is treated as sRGB.

Adobe RGB — wider, particularly in greens and cyans. Covers more of what a CMYK press can print, which is why it is the professional print standard.

ProPhoto RGB — very wide, wide enough to include colours no display or printer can reproduce. Only sensible at 16-bit, where the extra precision prevents banding.

The rules

Work wide

Edit in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto at 16 bits. You are preserving options: colour you discard cannot be recovered, and every adjustment is less destructive with more headroom.

Your raw processor is doing this already, whether or not you have thought about it.

Deliver to the destination

Web, social, email, anything on a screen: sRGB. No exceptions.

This is the most important sentence on the page. Upload an Adobe RGB file to a platform and the numbers get interpreted as sRGB, producing a visibly flatter, duller image. It is the single most common colour mistake in photography and it is one click to avoid.

Print at a lab: ask the lab. Most consumer labs want sRGB. Professional labs often want Adobe RGB or a supplied ICC profile. Their answer is the answer.

Client with a designer: ask the designer. They may want Adobe RGB, or a specific CMYK conversion, or the layered original.

Archive: keep your master in the working space at 16-bit. Deliverables are derivatives you can regenerate; the master is not.

Convert, do not assign

Two different operations, and one of them is destructive in a way people do not expect.

Convert recalculates the numbers so the colours stay the same in the new space. This is what you want.

Assign changes the label without touching the numbers, so the colours change. It is occasionally the right tool when a file has the wrong profile attached, and it is almost never what you want on export.

Embed the profile

Always. An unprofiled file is a guess, and the guess is sRGB.

Two problems worth naming

"My photos look flat online." Nearly always an Adobe RGB file uploaded without conversion. Convert to sRGB on export.

"The print does not match my screen." Usually monitor calibration rather than colour space. A hardware-calibrated display is the only reliable fix, and it is worth more than any other single purchase for anyone delivering print.

Soft proofing, briefly

If you deliver print regularly, soft proofing — previewing with the printer's profile applied — is the tool that tells you which colours will not survive.

The saturated blues and greens that look best on screen are often the ones a printer cannot reach. Seeing that before the print rather than after saves both money and an awkward conversation.

What we deliver

If you tell us the destination when you send the work, you get the right one. If a job needs both, say so and you get both.

The two things worth investing in

A hardware-calibrated monitor is the highest-value purchase available to anyone delivering print, and it is not close. It does not make you faster; it stops you doing work twice and it ends the argument about whether the print or the screen is wrong.

Soft proofing is the second. Previewing with the destination profile applied tells you which colours will not survive before you pay for paper, and the saturated blues and greens that look best on screen are frequently the ones a printer cannot reach.

Neither of those is exciting and both remove a category of problem permanently.

Beyond that, the rules are short enough to memorise: work wide, deliver to the destination, convert rather than assign, embed the profile, and keep the master in the working space at 16 bits. Everything else about colour management follows from those five.
