Project overview

A black garment on a white background is the hardest exposure in the studio: lifting the background clips the garment's shadow detail, and protecting the garment leaves the background grey.

Transformation details

Background and subject were treated as two separate exposures and reconciled at the end, rather than balanced as one.
The garment's boning and lace were recovered in the shadows before the background was lifted at all.
The floor join was rebuilt so the white runs continuous behind the feet.
Skin was evened with the warm tone kept, so it holds against a pure background.
