Instagram re-compresses everything you upload. You cannot avoid that, but you can control what it starts from, which is most of the battle.
The short answer: convert to sRGB, export close to the platform's own display dimensions, sharpen modestly after resizing, and save at high quality rather than maximum. Platforms re-encode everything, and you cannot prevent that — but you can control what they start from, which is most of the outcome.
Every image uploaded to a social platform is re-encoded on the platform's terms. You do not control that step. What you control is what it is given to work with, and that determines most of the outcome.
The four things that actually matter
1. Colour space: sRGB, always
This is the one that causes the most visible damage and it is completely avoidable.
Export in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto and upload it, and the platform will treat the numbers as sRGB. The result is a noticeably flatter, duller image — most obviously in reds and greens.
Convert to sRGB on export. Not "assign" — convert. Every export dialog has this option and it takes one click.
2. Dimensions: match the platform, do not exceed it wildly
Upload something enormously larger than the platform displays and it will downsample, using its own algorithm, which is not as good as yours.
Export at or close to the platform's own display dimensions. You do your own high-quality downsample, and the platform has less work to do, which means less damage.
Because these numbers change, check the platform's current guidance rather than trusting a blog post — including this one. The principle is stable; the pixel counts are not.
3. Sharpening: for screen, and modestly
Downsampling softens an image. Some output sharpening restores the impression of detail.
Two rules: sharpen after resizing, not before; and less than you think. Compression amplifies sharpening artefacts, so a file that looks crisp on your desktop can look crunchy after the platform has finished with it.
4. Compression: high quality, not maximum
Exporting at maximum quality produces a very large file that the platform will re-compress anyway. Exporting at low quality gives it artefacts to amplify.
High quality — not maximum — is the sensible middle. The visual difference between 85 and 100 is negligible; the file size difference is not.
Why your uploads look worse than your export
Re-compression. Unavoidable. Minimise it by uploading a file that is already close to the display size.
Colour space mismatch. See above. This is the big one.
Aggressive sharpening meeting compression. They interact badly.
Heavy grain or noise. Compression handles noise extremely poorly — it is high-frequency detail that costs a lot of bits and gets destroyed first, producing blotches. If you use grain, keep it light for social.
Large flat gradients. Skies and studio backdrops band under compression. A very small amount of noise added deliberately to a gradient helps more than it sounds like it should.
Uploading from a phone after the phone has already processed it. Two compressions instead of one.
A workflow that holds up
- Finish the edit at full resolution in your working colour space.
- Export a full-resolution master and archive it.
- From the master, export a social version: resized to the platform's dimensions, converted to sRGB, output-sharpened for screen, saved at high quality.
- Upload that file directly rather than sending it through another app first.
The important part is exporting from the master rather than from a previous export. Every generation costs something.
Crops and aspect ratios
Compose for the crop the platform will apply, or crop deliberately yourself. Letting a platform decide where to cut is how heads end up out of frame.
If a frame has to work in more than one ratio, export each ratio separately rather than hoping one crop survives all of them.
The thing worth remembering
Social platforms are a delivery channel, not the archive. Keep the full-resolution master, in your working colour space, with layers if it has them. The social export is disposable and can be regenerated; the master cannot.
If a set is going to social as well as print, get the retouching right at full resolution first and export downward. Retouching from $2.50 per image is delivered at full resolution for exactly that reason — the social crop is a derivative, not the deliverable.
Keeping the master separate
The habit worth building is treating every social file as disposable.
Finish the edit at full resolution, export and archive a master in your working colour space, and generate social versions from that master rather than from a previous export. Every generation of re-encoding costs something, and the losses accumulate invisibly until someone asks for a print.
That also means a platform changing its dimensions is a ten-minute re-export rather than a re-edit, and a frame going to print later does not have to be rescued from a compressed copy.
For sets that go to both social and print, get the retouching right at full resolution first. The social crop is a derivative, and deriving it from a finished frame takes a moment while finishing a derived frame takes the work twice.
Common questions
Why do my uploads look duller than my export? Almost always a colour space mismatch. Adobe RGB uploaded to a platform gets interpreted as sRGB, which flattens reds and greens. Convert to sRGB on export — one click, and it is the single biggest fix available.
Should I upload the largest file I have? No. A very large file will be downsampled by the platform's algorithm, which is not as good as yours. Export close to the platform's own display dimensions so you control the resize.
How much should I sharpen? Less than you think, and after resizing rather than before. Compression amplifies sharpening artefacts, so a file that looks crisp on your desktop can look crunchy once the platform has finished with it.
