Project overview

Everything in the picture is brown. Without separation the subject dissolves into the backdrop, and the standard fix — adding contrast — makes the skin muddy.

Transformation details

Separation was built by value rather than by colour: the backdrop was darkened away from the body edge and the skin's highlights lifted slightly.
The wardrobe was shifted a small amount away from the skin's hue so the two read as different materials.
Skin was evened with frequency separation and the leg modelling rebuilt with dodge and burn.
The floor was cleaned and its reflection softened.
