Moonlit Shoreline Mermaid Composite

Creative composite

A grey-backdrop studio pose becomes a moonlit shoreline, with a metallic tail built to the subject's own pose and reflections matched to the water.

Project overview

The capture is a seated pose on a white box against a plain grey wall. The pose already suggests a figure resting on a rock, but nothing in the frame supports it, and the flat frontal studio light is the opposite of the directional moonlight the concept needs.

Transformation details

  • A night shoreline was built behind the subject with the moon placed on the side the studio key was already coming from, so the relight is a change of colour rather than a change of direction.

  • The box was replaced with wet rock and a contact shadow was drawn where the body actually meets it — the join that gives a composite away when it is missing.

  • A scaled tail was built to follow the existing leg line, then given the same specular highlights as the water so it belongs to the scene rather than sitting on top of it.

  • A cool grade was applied last, with the skin held back from going blue.
