How to Fix Mixed Lighting and Wrong Skin Tones

One white balance cannot be correct for two light sources. The fix is to stop trying to find one and correct the sources separately.

The short answer: stop looking for one correct white balance, because with two light sources there is not one. Correct globally for whichever source is lighting the face, mask the areas lit by the other source, and correct those separately. Then get the skin right on its own, last, regardless of what the rest of the frame is doing.

A window on one side and a tungsten lamp on the other. Daylight through the door and fluorescents overhead. Flash on the subject and street light behind them. Every one of these produces the same result: a frame where no single white balance is correct.

Photographers spend a long time dragging the temperature slider back and forth on these files, and the reason it never lands is that they are looking for a value that does not exist. Correct for the window and the lamp side goes orange. Correct for the lamp and the window side goes blue.

Understand what has happened

Different light sources have different spectral content. Your camera applies one white balance to the whole sensor. Where the light on a subject came from two sources in different proportions in different parts of the frame, one global correction cannot be right in both places.

So stop looking for one.

The method

1. Correct globally for whichever source is on the subject

Not the brightest source, not the largest area — the one lighting the face. That is the part a viewer judges everything else against.

Use the eye whites or a neutral part of the clothing as a reference, not a wall — walls are painted colours.

2. Look at what is now wrong

The other source is now visibly off. That is expected and it is progress, because the problem has become local rather than global.

3. Mask the areas lit by the other source

Every modern raw processor has local adjustments with real masks. Brush, gradient or a luminosity or colour range selection, whichever fits the shape of the light.

The boundary is rarely sharp — light falls off gradually — so feather generously. A hard-edged colour correction is more visible than the cast you started with.

4. Correct temperature and tint inside the mask

Adjust until the two areas agree. You are aiming for one consistent look, not for both being technically neutral.

5. Refine the skin separately

The most important step, and the one most often skipped.

Get skin right last, on its own, regardless of what the rest of the frame is doing. Viewers have an extremely accurate internal reference for skin and almost none for a wall. A frame with slightly green walls and correct skin looks fine; a frame with neutral walls and green skin looks broken.

Use a skin-specific colour tool if your software has one — Capture One's skin tone mode, or an HSL adjustment targeted at the orange and red ranges.

6. Consider keeping one cast deliberately

Sometimes the mixed light is the picture. A warm interior and a cool blue window is a look, not a fault, and neutralising both produces something duller than what you photographed.

Correct the skin, leave the room, and the frame reads as intentional.

Two specific situations

Flash against evening ambient

The classic mismatch: a correctly exposed subject in front of a dark, colour-shifted background.

Fix in this order — lift the ambient background and correct its colour first, so the environment reads as evening rather than as underexposure. Then soften the flash falloff at its edges so the transition into the background is gradual. Then match the foreground to the corrected background.

Doing it the other way round — correcting the subject first — means you end up matching the background to a subject that is lit differently from everything around it.

Overhead sun on a location

Harsh midday light bounces off the ground into the underside of the face, which is where it does its damage. The chin and neck pick up whatever colour the ground is: green from grass, warm from sand, grey-blue from tarmac.

Correct the underside of the face separately from the top. It is a small mask and it makes an outsized difference.

Getting it right in camera

A grey card at the start of each lighting setup gives you a reference to click on. Gelling flash to match ambient removes the problem entirely — CTO for tungsten, plus green for fluorescent. And where you can, turning off one of the sources is faster than fixing it.

None of that helps the file you already have, but it is how photographers who shoot in mixed light stop having this problem.

The set-consistency version of the problem

Mixed light within a frame is one problem. Mixed light across a set is a different one, and worse: forty frames each slightly different because the daylight changed while you worked.

That is a matching job rather than a correction job, and it is what "colour correction across the set" means when a studio quotes for it. Sets are corrected against one reference rather than image by image, which is the only way a gallery arrives consistent — Standard Retouching includes it at $4 per image.

The judgement underneath the technique

The technical method is straightforward. The decision that matters is how much of the mixed light to keep.

A warm interior against a cool window is a look. Neutralising both produces a technically correct frame that is duller than what you photographed, and clients respond to the duller version exactly as you would expect.

The reliable rule is that skin must be right and everything else may be interesting. Viewers have an extremely accurate internal reference for skin tone and almost none for a wall, so a frame with a slightly green room and correct faces reads as atmospheric, while the reverse reads as broken.

Across a set, the same rule applies at a larger scale: match the faces first, then decide how much variation between environments is character and how much is inconsistency. That decision is the one worth making deliberately rather than discovering in a client's gallery.

Common questions

Why can I never find the right white balance? Because with two light sources there is no single correct value. Stop looking for one, correct globally for whichever source is on the subject, then mask and correct the other area separately.

Should I neutralise everything? Not necessarily. Mixed light is often the picture — a warm interior against a cool window is a look. Correct the skin, leave the room, and the frame reads as intentional rather than as a mistake.

How do I stop this happening on the next shoot? A grey card at the start of each lighting setup, gels to match flash to ambient, or simply turning one of the sources off. All three are faster than fixing it afterwards.
